The Truth Behind Common Myths About Rescue Dogs

Did you know that October is National Adopt-A-Dog Month? It's the perfect time to spread the word about the importance of adopting rescue dogs. We often hear the phrase "Adopt don't shop," but there are still some myths about adopting a dog from a shelter that work against this idea. Let's break down some common misconceptions and talk about the benefits of adopting a furry friend.

Myth #1: Rescue dogs have more health issues.

Rescue dogs don't have any more or less health issues than any other dog. Over 50% of the EHS budget goes towards medical expenses, and our dedicated team ensures that each dog is fully healed, spayed/neutered, and vaccinated before finding their forever home.

Myth #2: Rescue dogs have bad behaviours.

We believe that a dog's previous living conditions and upbringing contribute to their behaviours. Rescue dogs often come from rougher conditions where they've had to protect their resources. With love and attention, they can learn to be the perfect companion. We work hard to address any behavioural issues before they are adopted.

Myth #3: You can't get a purebred dog or puppies from a shelter.

This is a common misconception, in fact, we recently had a litter of puppies at EHS. However, puppies are so desired that they get adopted very quickly. An older dog is just as loveable, and you won't even have to go through the puppy teething phase. As for purebreds, we believe mixed-breed dogs are just as wonderful as any other. But if you have your heart set on a breed, there are plenty of shelters that specialize in specific types of dogs.

Myth #4: There are no consequences to a dog staying long-term since we're a no-kill shelter.

The longer a dog stays with us, the more strain it puts on our resources. Adopting a dog not only gives them a loving home but also allows us to make room for more animals in need.
