His name is Mickey, but he is more like Goofy!
Mickey the cat was born in a rural area as part of a litter of four, but he was separated from his mother and littermates at just seven weeks old. This was likely too early to have learned all that he needed to from his mother, and to fully gain the social skills that come from interacting with littermates at that young age. This led to Mickey being surrendered because of his behaviour, but now he is ready to show the right person(s) what a fun, affectionate, and well-behaved boy he can be!
About Mickey
- In foster
- Mickey has been described by his foster parent as a goofy, sweet little man who sometimes expresses himself through biting.
- He is a smart cat that has had great success with high-five and “touch for nose-boops” clicker training with his foster. A feline nose is hyper-sensitive, so nose-boops are reserved for someone he really trusts!
- Although Mickey is sociable on his own terms, he loves to be around people, even sometimes “helping” with household tasks like cleaning, organizing, and building furniture!
- He can get overstimulated, so it is important to watch for his cues. When Mickey is feeling anxious, it is best to give him some alone time.
- Mickey uses a scratching post a lot and loves to play with laser pointers, wand toys, and small wind-up toys.
- This fluffy feline usually wears an impressive coat of floof, but he recently had a dramatic haircut to deal with some fur tangles and mats. A thick, glorious coat like his needs regular maintenance. Fortunately, he enjoys being brushed so it is best to keep on top of that as much as possible.
- Mickey has earned a reputation at vet visits for some serious “cattitude”. He may take a little time to figure out, but Mickey has a sweet side that, for the right person (that isn’t a vet), is well worth getting to know!
- Some of Mickey’s favourite spots to hang out are on the window sill, the bathtub or the bathroom sink, and his favourite, on the lap of someone he is comfortable with.
- Mickey takes a daily calming supplement and a behaviour medication to help calm his reactive tendencies.
- Mickey is neutered, microchipped, dewormed, flea-treated, SNAP-tested for FIV/FeLV, and is up to date on core vaccinations.
Mickey’s Ideal Home
- Mickey would do best in a home with a predictable routine, in particular, a consistent feeding schedule and dedicated playtime routine. These things go a long way towards keeping this “loveable rascal” on his best behaviour!
- Although Mickey is a lovely boy who has made huge progress in foster care, he sometimes forgets his manners and will bite in an effort to get someone’s attention.
- Ideally, a potential adopter(s) should have the experience to read Mickey’s body language, is not concerned by occasional swatting or biting, and be able to prevent or redirect that type of behaviour, or be willing to learn.
- Mickey must be the only cat in the house and no young children.
- We are unsure how Mickey would do with dogs or other pets as he has had no exposure to them.
- EHS will offer a short foster-to-adopt period before finalizing the adoption to assist Mickey with successfully transitioning into a forever home. During this time, our skilled volunteers will offer support to the potential adopters as they get to know Mickey and help ensure everyone settles in comfortably together.
