From the Streets to a Second Chance at Happiness

Hobbes’ Journey from Survival to Safety

Our special boy, Hobbes, has found his happy ending!

Sometimes, working in animal rescue, we come across heartbreaking cases. Our cats and dogs can make their way to us from difficult situations, and have illnesses or injuries.

Hobbes is one of those cases.

He came to us in terrible shape after living on the streets of Etobicoke for three years. Those years without proper care had taken a toll on his body, and he was suffering from severe dental disease and was in overall poor condition.

Rescuers who had been keeping an eye on him, recognized he was in trouble and caught him. A vet recommended he be euthanized if he could not be taken in by a rescue and receive immediate medical care. We stepped in to help and Hobbes’ long journey to recovery — and ultimately adoption — began.

A Long Road to Recovery

His vet exam identified not only that he had dental disease, but also that he was FIV+, a common condition in cats who live outdoors.

Before he could get treatment to address his periodontal issues, he needed time in a safe space to rest and recover. We can’t thank his foster enough for the care he provided, which was essential to giving Hobbes the best chance at healing.

He needed multiple dental surgeries spread out over several months, and time in between each one to recover. As a result of his dental issues, his tongue tends to stick out most of the time, but we think this is just part of his charm.

As he grew healthier, he started to eat better and gain weight. And his loving and trusting personality began to show. Once he was fully recovered, he showed his playful and affectionate side.

A Happy Ending at Last

Hobbes started off 2026 in the best way possible by getting adopted in January. He now has the happy ending he deserves!

We’re thrilled that we could give him this second chance. It’s thanks to our supporters that we had the resources to pay for his vet bills, which amounted to several thousand dollars. We know it was worth it, as he’s getting to know the safety and comfort of a loving home.
