ETOBICOKE (March 20, 2012) – The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) – now over 25 years old and still an all-volunteer charity – has announced that it will soon be moving to a new location at 67 Six Point Road in Etobicoke. While the exact moving date has not been set, EHS expects the new facility to be operational in May for cats, dogs, small caged pets and birds and anticipates a June or July grand opening. Until then, the humane society will continue operations at its current location at Royal York Plaza, 1500 Royal York Road, Suite E.
The new shelter space is located approximately four blocks south of Bloor Street and can be accessed by both Kipling Avenue and Islington Avenue. It will include 3,600 square feet of outside doggie play area, 2,600 square feet of shelter space,1,400 square feet of office space for use in adoption procedures, education and administration, and will be centrally located and close to the TTC.
Karen Heaslip, Etobicoke Humane Society Volunteer Shelter Manager said: "Since the December election of our new Board of Directors, they have been working tirelessly to bring the Etobicoke Humane Society to the next level of our development in which our shelter space is not limited to cats. Our Six Point Road location means that we will be leasing a small building which will enable us to significantly expand our programs, especially on-site sheltering for dogs as well as small caged pets and birds. Of course, we will continue to utilize foster homes which increase our sheltering capacity and offer important alternatives for stressed and frightened animals and those in need of special attention."
Says EHS President Pia Lauretti, "After 25 years, this move marks a new beginning, one that has been eagerly anticipated by our supporters and volunteers. The new facility is perfect for our expansion needs, but as a small charity, it's also a big challenge for us. We are depending on the generous support of our community to help us meet this challenge. We'll need increased monetary support; volunteers to help us with moving, cleaning, painting, renovations; donations of related supplies; dog kennels; food for dogs, cats, small caged pets and birds; pet beds; general operational supplies; shelving; storage containers and much more."
