Etobicoke residents will bake cupcakes to sweeten the lives of homeless, abused and injured animals at the Etobicoke Humane Society on National Cupcake Day. Participants bake cupcakes for donations, helping local humane societies and SPCAs across Canada give surrendered animals a new home, provide emergency medical care and rescue neglected and abused animals.
“EHS operates entirely from donations, adoption fees and our own fundraising efforts, so events like National Cupcake Day are essential to increasing donations and animal welfare awareness,” said Pia Lauretti, president and spokesperson, EHS. "Funds raised through this event will support EHS’s rescue initiatives for abused, abandoned and orphaned animals, and help them find forever homes.”
The Ontario SPCA and British Columbia SPCA encourage participants to register online at nationalcupcakeday.ca and bake cupcakes for friends, family and colleagues in return for donations. On Feb. 25, 2013 bakers can host a National Cupcake Day party at their home, office or school; guests donate online to attend, or in person when they pick up their cupcake. Participants can set up an online bakery to track cupcake orders, send emails to friends and family and manage fundraising.
“I’m hosting my own cupcake party for close friends and family; I just got my host kit in the mail,” said Lauren Tedesco, board member, EHS. “Everyone loves cupcakes and animals; it is a fun and easy way to help the lives of animals at the shelter.”
National Cupcake Day is an effort to fight animal cruelty with cupcakes. It has a long, successful history in many countries including Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. National Cupcake Day fundraising will support community shelters, clinics, inspectors and animals.
