Buddy and Tascha

Buddy and Tascha are both friendly German Shepherd dogs but their temperaments and adoption criteria are very different.

Buddy is chill and easy going. Happy to lie beside you while you work or to go on easy walks in the ravines. He would transition easily into family life.

Tascha is less familiar with family life. She is friendly but anxious especially when left alone. In time, and with the help of our trainer, she will make a loyal companion.

In addition to their breed they share something else in common. They both have been diagnosed with hip dysplasia, a common hereditary skeletal condition often seen in large breed dogs. X-rays reveal that their hip joints do not fit or haven’t developed properly and rub and grind instead of sliding smoothly.

Our vets have recommended treatments and lifestyle changes that will keep them comfortable well into old age.

  • Weight maintenance to take stress off of the hips
  • Exercise restriction, especially jumping and hard surfaces
  • Physical therapy and swimming if they enjoy
  • Joint supplements (glucosamine/chondroitin and omega-3 fatty acid oil)
  • Anti-inflammatory medications (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids)

Dogs with hip dysplasia often lead long, full lives, especially with treatment and the love and comfort of a wonderful forever home.
