Black cats come in all shapes and sizes, with all different kinds of personalities just like other cats. But they’re less likely to get adopted because of their colour.
We saw this happen first hand when we helped with a hoarding situation in March of 2019. We took in 41 cats from the home, and they were all either tabby coloured or black. In the months that followed, our volunteers watched as almost all of the tabby cats were adopted out, while the black cats were overlooked.
Traditionally, it was thought that people weren’t interested in black cats because of superstitions, as black cats are seen as bad luck. These days, it’s thought people also avoid black cats because they don’t photograph well for social media.
As October is Black Cat Awareness Month, we want to take this opportunity to promote our beautiful black cats. They make great family members and shouldn’t be left behind in shelters because of their colour.
