Say hello to Tank, a handsome, ten year old terrier cross who came to us from another Ontario rescue. Tank was surrendered because his long-time family had introduced a baby into the family and Tank's behaviour quirks created some challenges for them. Tank is looking for a very special adopter to take him home and give him structure and love.
Tank is stubborn and pretty determined to get what he wants. He has had obedience training, but his stubbornness interferes with his ability to follow instruction consistently. What this means is sometimes he follows instructions beautifully and other times he decides he wont. This makes him unpredictable and for this reason we think he needs to go to an experienced dog owner who can manage this effectively for Tank. Tank is a happy guy in his structured environment but his behaviour can deteriorate quickly when his environment is less structured, and he can be quite vocal when excited.
Tank likes his walks and outdoor time and has been known to resist coming indoors. While he has been socialized with other dogs, it's not his favourite thing and he is not shy about letting them know. He has a tendency to resource guard, which means that he latches on to items of value and resists being parted from them. He will take over the bed and chase you out if you let him.
Tank is neutered and is up to date on his shots. He weighs about 18 kilograms (40 pounds). He is house trained. Any new adopter should expect a transition period for him as he relaxes into his new home.
Tank is looking for a very specific home. Ideally we would place Tank with a single male in a quiet home who is home a lot or can take Tank on the road with him. We think that Tank would love to be a great sidekick for someone who lives in the country and putters - gardening, workshop, maintenance work. If there is more than one person in the home, everyone will need to reinforce a consistent structure and discipline for Tank, otherwise he may slip into bad behaviours. We will not place Tank in a home with dogs or cats or with children or frequent young visitors. Tank would thrive in a quiet calm home with no or very few visitors and with a fully fenced yard. If Tank's adopters had a good understanding of how to manage a dog who resource guards that would be a significant plus for everyone!
Tank should improve with a person who is prepared to continue working with him on his behaviour quirks. Right now Tank is living in a training facility in the Peterborough area. Potential adopters for Tank should expect to visit him a few times at this facility before taking him home and his current trainer will assist with training knowledge transfer.
