A 1-Year-Old Playful Black Cat

Meet Suki! She was rescued and spayed from a colony in Hamilton when she was about 10 months old. Unfortunately, Suki tested positive for Female Leukemia Virus (FeLV) when she was rescued but has not exhibited any symptoms of illness since arriving in our care.

Because of her rough start in life, Suki gets scared easily and isn’t sure how to interact with people. She will seek safe hiding spots—under furniture or in her covered cat bed—until she gets to know you better. She feels safest in the shadows at night, where she can meow softly to the moon while playing with her favourite hairbands and small balls.

Once she warms up to you, she’ll gladly keep you company from the top of the cat tree, on the table, or next to you on the bed. But please, no unwanted touching! Scratches are okay if you slowly approach, preferably with food. Suki is a secret foodie and will gladly lap up treats from your hand. She’s a gentle kitty and will not bite or scratch even when she’s feeling super playful. She’s even learned to play with a cat wand recently!

Suki is litter-trained. We think she’ll thrive in a structured environment where her needs are recognized and respected.

Who is Suki’s perfect adopter?

Suki needs a special home where her family understands that FeLV is not curable. Cats with FeLV have a weakened immune system that can lead to different types of cancer, intestinal and ocular diseases, life-threatening anemia, and a progressive deterioration of health over time. 80%-90% of cats infected with FeLV will live for about 3 to 4 years after initial diagnosis. However, Suki appears to have a regressive FeLV infection, which means that she has a low amount of virus in her body and has a relatively low risk of developing FeLV-related diseases. Best case scenario would be that her immune system can overcome the infection entirely, but her family should be prepared to handle all possibilities related to a FeLV diagnosis.

Suki would benefit from an experienced cat owner or family who can provide her with the veterinary care she will need eventually to maintain a comfortable quality of life. Because of her FeLV diagnosis and for safety reasons, she needs to be an indoor cat only.

The perfect home for Suki is calm and predictable with lots of places and perches for her to retreat to when she feels overstimulated.
