Things to consider when bringing your pet along during patio season

Warm weather is around the corner, and that can mean only one thing. Patio season is almost upon us! We certainly can’t be the only ones who want to capitalize on time spent with our pets in good weather. When the patios open, so does the possibility of bringing our pets to dine and drink with us. Here are a few things to consider before you bring your pet with you this spring:

  1. Are you sure it’s pet-friendly? It’s easy to assume an outdoor location allows pets, but for many health and safety reasons, they may not. Even if you’ve seen a dog there before, it could have been a special allowance for a service animal. Double-check; a simple call can confirm your suspicions and even update you on potential stressors.
  1. Is it for them? We love our pets and would love to bring them everywhere, but do they want to go? Some dogs are easily adaptable and enjoy the change of scenery, but it’s also okay for you to have a brief outing without them if they’d be more at ease at home.
  1. Do you know what to expect? There are many factors to consider (i.e. crowds, noise, etc.), but it can be easier to manage if you know what to expect and how to manage potential reactions. Check for special events that may affect the usual crowd. Make sure to bring them any necessary food, drinks, or toys.
  1. Did you check the weather? You often don't choose outdoor seating in poor weather, but some weather conditions aren’t good for pets. For example, if hot and without shade, they could overheat. Or, if it rains, you may have to move inside where they may not be allowed.
  1. Do you know proper etiquette? Unfortunately, not everyone loves pets as much as you do and may not be as comfortable with their behaviours. Know their limits and be ready to divide your attention to avoid any unwanted behaviours. General rule of thumb: avoid letting them into other customers' table-space unless expressly desired. Don’t forget your pet has limits too; they may not want too many people in their space either (even though they completely deserve the attention).

If you answered yes to all these questions, good news! Your pet is ready to head out on the town with you. Enjoy the nice weather and stimulate their senses with a new environment.

EHS has visiting hours, only for cats who are at our shelter. Visiting hours are 2-6pm on Saturday & Sunday. If you'd like to adopt a cat or dog (including one of our special dogs), please apply online and one of our volunteers will contact you.
