Meet “Meow-kel” Merino!
Merino the cat was found wandering the streets of Hamilton. This little superstar had no owner or medical history and, like many strays, was pretty terrified when he first arrived at EHS from an overcrowded municipal shelter. The World Cup may have come and gone, but we’re excited to help Merino with his next big goal: finding a forever home.
About Merino
- At shelter
- Merino is a skittish cat who appears to have had minimal experience with humans.
- He is currently enrolled in EHS’s socialization program, where dedicated volunteers are working to help him become more comfortable around people.
- Shelter volunteers have described Merino as “scared and shy, but very sweet.”
- Merino is making progress in our cat socialization program, but he is still a slow-approach kind of fellow. He is now accepting pets using the back-scratcher as well as the occasional pet by hand, usually while distracted by food. His favourite areas are the chin, cheeks, top of head and upper chest. At a recent petting session, he started leaning in for more. One day at a time, sweet boy!
- At times, his tail will start to twitch or he may give a hiss or swat when he’s overstimulated. He’s also prone to “airplane ears” when he’s feeling afraid. Potential adopters should be familiar with cat body language.
- The way to Merino’s heart may be through his stomach. He has licked a tuna-flavoured Churu treat from a shelter volunteer’s hand and will gently take dry kibble by hand as well. Volunteers report that food makes Merino “significantly more relaxed.” We get that, buddy!
- Merino underwent major dental surgery and, as a result, has the sweetest snaggle tooth at the bottom of his mouth, which we think makes him extra adorable.
- He likes to spend time in his cat tree and has recently played with a feather wand toy.
- Volunteers report that Merino can sometimes be a bit vocal. Perhaps he is arguing about whether his sport is called “soccer” or “fútbol”?
- Merino is neutered, microchipped, dewormed, flea-treated, SNAP-tested for FIV/FeLV, and is up to date on core vaccinations.
Merino's Ideal Home
- Merino will benefit from a calm, quiet environment.
- He does occasionally door dash, so he would not be suitable in a home with young children.
- As we get to know Merino, we will be able to determine if he would welcome a feline friend.
- His compatibility with dogs is unknown.
- Potential adopters should be prepared to commit the time, effort, and patience required to help Merino settle into his new environment. EHS will provide post-adoption support to assist Merino with a successful transition to his forever home.
