The Reality of Animal Rescue

Posted 31/03/2024 | |

Difficult days and bright sides

At the end of February, we worked with Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAW) in Chatham-Kent to take in some of their incoming pets in what turned out to be a bittersweet turn of events. They expected to receive a litter of six puppies. And despite their best efforts, they did not have room for the pups, so we stepped in to take them.

We made room in the shelter, prepped our resources and made arrangements for their transport to us. Ready to take the puppies into our care, we were disappointed to hear the puppies were instead sold for profit by the owners. The sad reality is that since the puppies likely weren’t vaccinated, de-wormed, or taken for medical care—services the shelter usually provides—they may end up back with animal control in the future. We can only hope the families they went to show them lots of love and get them the care they need.

With all the resources already prepared, we have a bright side to this unfortunate story. Since we were all ready for some new arrivals in the shelter, we worked with PAW Rescue to take three other dogs out of their care, making room for more to be saved from euthanasia in the future. One of the dogs, Valerie, has already been adopted by a couple who volunteer with EHS and fell in love with her at the shelter. The other two dogs are now looking for their forever families.

Without further ado, meet our newest residents!

Meet Gravy, 2 years old

Gravy is a male Husky/Shepherd mix with a heart as large as his appetite. This guy has infectious joy, always wagging his tail and showing off his playful spirit. He’s incredibly adaptable and makes every moment a potential adventure. Gravy is affectionate, loyal and easy to get along with, making him perfect for a multi-pet household.

We think he may have a little countryside charm as he seems to be very comfortable in large, open spaces. Gravy is no doubt a great companion to join your family.

Meet Briar, 6 months old

Briar is a female mixed breed whose heart is as beautiful as her markings. She is a bundle of energy, always ready for an adventure and playtime. Her spirit and love for life are contagious and bring joy to everyone’s day.

She would be perfect for an active family that enjoys the outdoors, and since she loves both people and pets, she can get along with every member. Her unique markings are a work of art, her mix of breeds only contributing to her charm.

If you’re interested in Gravy or Briar, fill out an adoption form on the our dog adoption page here.

EHS has visiting hours, only for cats who are at our shelter. Visiting hours are 2-6pm on Saturday & Sunday. If you'd like to adopt a cat or dog (including one of our special dogs), please apply online and one of our volunteers will contact you.
