A life-saving procedure for Moira the cat

In late fall 2023, an undersized young cat named Moira came into our care from a municipal shelter. She was at risk of being euthanized because of chronic diarrhea and vomiting.

She was a year old, but weighed the same as a five or six month old kitten. We knew she needed vet care, and quickly, as it was clear there was an underlying condition causing her to be so ill.

Despite everything she was going through, Moira was bright, alert, friendly and outgoing. She entered the shelter and within hours had a fan base amassing. Volunteers very quickly shared photos and videos of this adorable waif. She insisted on attention from everyone who walked by and would soak up ear scritches and cuddles.

After some testing, it was discovered Moira had intussusception of her jejunum, which meant part of her small intestine had folded into an adjacent part, causing an obstruction. This affected many internal organs and if it wasn’t fixed, would continue to cause issues and eventually death. She also had anemia. It was quickly decided she would require surgery.

All indications were that this young and vibrant cat could make a full recovery if the issue could be resolved. So with the approval of our Board, Moira underwent surgery. Testing was performed on materials from the surgical site which showed that a piece of plant material was embedded in her intestine and may have caused the intussusception.

After many months of recovery in a loving foster home, follow ups and rechecks, Moira is now healthy, and we’re happy to say has been adopted into a loving forever home! She loves to chat, buries her toys under rugs and will jump into any willing lap.

We have given Moira a second chance—one that she is fully taking advantage of. Even at her worst Moira was full of life and love. Her surgery cost more than $7,000, but despite the steep price, we knew Moira wanted to be here and we weren’t willing to give up on her.
