Puddles to watch out for

Lepto what?? Leptospira is a bacteria that both wild and domestic animals can carry and is spread through their urine. Leptospirosis occurs after an animal drinks contaminated water, or an open wound comes into contact with fluid infected with Leptospira. Puddles can be a source of Lepto, and although it’s more common in rural areas, it’s also found in towns and cities.

After entering the body, the bacteria spreads to organs, ultimately settling in the kidneys, where it begins to wreak havoc. Symptoms include fever, excessive water consumption, depression, joint pain, jaundice, low appetite, and general malaise. But the good news is that this disease is preventable. There’s a vaccine available for Leptospirosis. Speak to your vet to see if it’s the right thing for your dog.

But if you suspect your pet may have come into contact with Leptospira and they aren’t vaccinated, take them to the vet. The disease is most often treated with penicillin and, if caught early enough, the prognosis is good.
