Finding homes for animals with special needs

EHS is a no-kill shelter, which means we will never euthanize a pet for lack of space. It also means we’re determined to go the extra mile to find homes for all of our pets, no matter how long that takes. Sometimes we have animals in our care that need to find a special home to fit their needs. An example of this is Sheba, a cat who came to us in July of last year when her owner unfortunately had to move into a long-term care home.

Sheba is considered a senior at eight-years-old and she has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a progressive heart condition. She appears stable at this time, but requires regular medication to help with the heart’s function and to try to stop the progression. Her medication costs about $20 a month and she needs cardiac check-ups at the vet to monitor her condition.

Sheba has been in foster care since arriving at EHS, and she’s described as a friendly girl who happily allows pets and especially loves to be scratched under the chin, on her face and head. Overall, Sheba is affectionate, good-natured and eager to interact with people. She is a playful girl who is now comfortable enough to let her foster parents know she wants to play. She’s very smart and recognizes her name and her foster reports that she’s a superstar at taking her medication.

Our challenge is finding the perfect home for Sheba. We need to find someone who is comfortable caring for a cat with a health condition, can commit to administering medication, can take on the monthly cost of her medicine and take her for yearly cardiac ultrasounds. They also need to be prepared for any unexpected health issues that could come up.

It can often take more time to find the perfect adopter for a cat like Sheba, but we’re committed to finding her the best possible home with someone who will overlook her health issues and see her as a lovable family member. Until that time, she’ll continue to get the care and attention she needs in her foster home and EHS will continue to pay for her health care, including her medication and vet visits.

To help us continue to care for Sheba while she waits to be adopted, make a donation to EHS.
