What is a "Bonded Pair?"

You may have noticed that Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) has two beautiful dogs up for adoption that are listed as a “bonded pair” right now, Royal (tan male) and Regal (black female).

At the shelter we understand that the thought of taking home two pups instead of one might be daunting for some, so EHS would like to explain what it means to come across a “bonded pair” in animals.

Over the years, we’ve had many bonded pairs at EHS! Most of our bonded pairs have been cats – long-term supporters and followers of the shelter may remember Precious and CocoSasha and Angel or more recently, Tori and Mazda. This post will focus on Royal and Regal, since this bonded pair deserve to go to a home that will appreciate them together and the love they have for each other.

As a policy and best practice, EHS does not typically adopt two young dogs together, however Royal and Regal are an exceptional case.

Important Facts About "Bonded Pairs"

A BONDED PAIR INDICATES TWO ANIMALS (LIKE ROYAL AND REGAL) WHO HAVE FORMED A VERY STRONG ATTACHMENT TO EACH OTHER

Royal and Regal do everything together including eating, sleeping, playing and going outside.

TO SEPARATE A BONDED PAIR WOULD CAUSE THEM GREAT DISTRESS

Royal and Regal are always happy as long as they are together. Whenever they are apart the pair both become extremely anxious and are unable to focus on anything except the other’s absence.

ONCE BONDED, A PAIR SHOULD STAY TOGETHER FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES FOR BOTH ANIMALS’ HAPPINESS AND HEALTH

Royal and Regal love to eat together so much so that they will not eat without each other’s company and they never fight over food. In fact, Royal is often kind enough to help Regal finish her food!

THE BENEFITS OF THE BONDED PAIR STAYING TOGETHER ARE SUBSTANTIAL

Regal helps Royal to come out of his shell and she’s always the first to meet new people. As soon as she is ready to approach someone, Royal is close behind.

THEY TRULY LOVE EACH OTHER THE SAME WAY YOU WOULD LOVE YOUR FAMILY OR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

Royal is very protective of his partner, and is always alert and very attentive whenever someone comes to say “hello."
