Call For Fosters

Posted 27/07/2023 | |
Grey Lounging Cat with Intense Eyes

We’re currently looking for fosters to help care for some of our awesome cats and dogs.

Summer can be a hard time for us, as many of our fosters go on vacation, but we still have many animals in need.

If you’re interested in caring for a pet and have the time and space to take in an animal, fostering could be a good option. You’ll get the companionship, nose rubs and cuddles, while also helping us make room to care for other cats and dogs.

What’s involved with fostering?

Fostering means the shelter covers all vet and food expenses while you provide transportation to and from vet appointments and meetings with adopters. Fostering is still a big commitment but not as permanent as adopting, and it can be very rewarding. Many animals need a little more love, attention, and training before they go to their forever homes. Becoming a foster helps the animal thrive in a calmer environment while helping the shelter take the time to care for more animals.

For dog fosters, we’re currently looking for fosters that meet the following criteria:

  • Have a home with a yard (preferably fully fenced)
  • Have no other pets or young children
  • Have experience handling, and are willing to take care of, a medium to large-sized dog (40-80 lbs)
  • Live within 25 kilometres of our shelter at 67 Six Point Road in Etobicoke
  • Have access to a car to transport the dog to the vet and shelter for visits, if necessary.

For cat fosters, we’re currently looking for fosters that meet the following criteria:

  • Interested in socializing skittish/fearful adult cats over a long period
  • Have no other pets
  • Have experience administering medication to cats
  • Have access to a vehicle or taxi/ride-sharing application to transport the cat to the vet and shelter for visits, if necessary.

If you meet these criteria, and want to learn more about fostering, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to cat.foster.manager@etobicokehumanesociety.com for cats or dog.foster.manager@etobicokehumanesociety.com for dogs.

EHS has visiting hours, only for cats who are at our shelter. Visiting hours are 2-6pm on Saturday & Sunday. If you'd like to adopt a cat or dog (including one of our special dogs), please apply online and one of our volunteers will contact you.
