Taking Care of Your Pet While Away

Going on vacation this summer? As a member of your family, your pets need to be taken care of when you’re away so it’s important to have a plan in place before escaping to the cottage.

First thing, think about whether or not you can take your pet with you. If you’re renting a cottage or staying in a hotel, check to see if they allow pets. Your pet might enjoy the change in scenery as much as you do. Just make sure your animal can be kept safe wherever you’re going.

If you can’t take your pet with you, you’ll need to make sure they are well taken care of while you’re gone. For cats, we recommend they stay in your home and have a cat-sitter or trusted friend or family member come by once or twice a day to feed, scoop the litter box, provide fresh water and spend time with the cat. This option also only works if your cat doesn’t mind being left alone for periods of time. It’s important to make sure this person is someone you trust and is reliable. They must agree to go to your house each day you’ll be away.

Using a boarding facility is common for dogs, with many options for doggy hotels. Before booking your pet at any location, make sure to visit so you can see where your pet will be staying and what services are available. You should also check references and make sure that the facility is aware of, and can handle, any quirks your dog may have. Cats get stressed out in new environments, so we do not recommend boarding cats unless it is a last resort.

A less expensive option is to have your pet stay with a trusted friend or family member. This will make sure they don’t get lonely. Make sure your pet will be comfortable and can be separated from any other pets in the home if needed. Remember, it’s important to take vacations — now more than ever. But make sure you have a plan for your pet before you leave.
