National Puppy Day

It is one of the cutest days of the year - let the #NationalPuppyDay celebrations begin!

So, today, consider what you might be able to do for dogs. Take your dog for an extra-long walk or consider adopting, volunteering or donating to an animal shelter in your community. These are all ways that you can give back to these amazing creatures who do so much for us.

National Puppy Day is dedicated to celebrate the love and magic puppies bring into our lives, but most importantly, it is to educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills. Puppy mills operate from coast to coast in Canada.

Are you think of adding a new puppy to your family? Consider adoption!

If you purchase a puppy from a pet store, internet classifieds or a flea market you unfortunately run the risk of supporting a puppy mill or backyard breeder. These businesses are cruel and inhumane - profit is the primary motive, not the health and wellbeing of the animals they sell.

Recognizing a Puppy Mill:

  • Bad odor/ unsanitary conditions
  • Unwilling to show the puppy’s parents
  • Puppies with weepy eyes and overall lethargy
  • A skinny puppy
  • A limping puppy
  • Puppies that show no interest in interacting with people

Encourage friends and family to adopt their next puppy rather than buying - support your local animal shelter, and save a life!

Reporting Animal Cruelty

If you do suspect a puppy mill is in operation or you witness animal cruelty, please report it ASAP to the OSPCA Animal Cruelty Investigations Department.
