Adopt a Pet

We are excited you are considering adoption! As it provides cats and dogs in shelters a second chance at a happy home. Before you begin, make sure you are ready to care and provide for your future animal. Here are five questions to ask yourself before starting the adoption process.

  1. Am I ready to make a long-term commitment?

The average age for cats and dogs has increased over the years due to the quality of care they are able to receive. Make sure you are ready to commit and think about where you will be in five, 10, 15 years.

  1. Am I financially prepared to take care of an animal?

According to Ontario SPCA, the average cost in Ontario for owning a cat or dog ranges from $1,800 - $2,800 per year. Adoption costs aside, you will need to budget for food, toys, hygiene products, exams, kennel/litter box, vaccinations, and insurance.

  1. Do I already have any pets?

Be prepared to spend some time getting them acquainted. For tips on how to introduce dogs and cats, check out or other blog post.

  1. Do I suffer from allergies?

Allergic reactions are one of the main reasons people surrender their pets. Make sure you or your family members have been tested for common pet allergies such as dander.

  1. Can I spend quality time with my new companion?

Just like humans, dogs can get bored which can lead to behavioural problems. You will have to devote time to exercising, training, grooming, and playing with your pet.
