The Etobicoke Humane Society is so grateful to our generous foster families, who serve as a “bridge” to an animal’s forever home.
Fosters play an important role in an animal’s journey. They not only provide a safe landing spot, but they also provide us with key insights into an animal’s likes, fears, and temperaments, which allow us to find their perfect match.
Foster families are critical for helping increase an animal’s chance of adoption. Foster families help introduce animals to new experiences, learn training and manners, and develop a routine. When an animal learns how to build trust with humans and integrate into a home environment, it makes them more likely to be adopted.
While EHS has extraordinary volunteers that provide exercise, enrichment, and human interaction, rescue animals have been through a lot, and some can find a shelter environment stressful. A loving foster home can be key in helping an anxious dog calm down, or a shy or reactive cat open up.
Take our pal, Remi. This sweet, two-year-old Lab/Mastiff mix came to us as a rescue all the way from Thunder Bay. Remi was very stressed when he first arrived after the long journey and had to be muzzled as he growled and snapped at the vet.
Remi was transferred to a foster family within a week, which helped his adjustment tremendously. He was able to show his calm and cuddly side and adored the company of people.
While in foster care, he was trained to come, sit, and stay, and learned to listen attentively on walks. Remi’s foster family referred to him as “the best dog ever!”
Thanks to the care of Remi’s foster family, as well as our shelter volunteers, Remi became a happy, healthy dog who was adopted into his forever home!
Fostering doesn’t just benefit the animal. Fosters learn patience, empathy, and communication, and gain valuable animal companionship without the long-term commitment. They can get a taste of the pet-owning experience while still having full support from the shelter. EHS handles expenses for fosters such as vet visits and checkups, medicine, food, and accessories such as toys, beds, and leashes. We also offer training and a responsive support team to answer questions and even provide in-person help if necessary.
We’re always looking for both short- and long-term fosters to open their homes to dogs and cats in need.
We’ll match you with an animal that fits your lifestyle and experience, and you will play a critical role in their journey.
