Holidays can be a scary time for animals because of fireworks. We have tips to help them stay calm and safe.
Did you know that animal rescues see an increase in stray animals after fireworks events, such as holiday celebrations?
Many pets can be startled by the loud noises and bright lights from fireworks, making them panic and run away. Pets that are indoors can still be stressed, and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association has called for restrictions on who can set off fireworks displays in an effort to protect not only pets, but also wildlife.
To help keep your pets safe and calm during fireworks, here are some tips to follow:
Leave pets at home if you’re attending a fireworks display. They won’t enjoy the show and may bolt and become lost. Find a quiet and calm area of your home and close doors and windows to help mute the noises. Turn on the TV or have a radio playing comforting music for them.
If you usually take your dog for a walk in the late evening or at night, have them go out earlier in the day to avoid letting them out after dark. Even a fenced yard is not secure as a dog could become spooked and jump over a fence.
Distract your pet with activities such as playing with toys or giving them a Kong/catnip to help distract them during fireworks activity.
If they somehow escape be sure to contact the local Animal Services immediately and provide their identification information and microchip number.
In addition, if you’re planning to set off fireworks, find a location away from your home and your pets. This could include a local park or other area that is approved for fireworks. Alternatively, sparklers are another way to celebrate holidays that avoid the loud noises of fireworks.
