Important Note: The Etobicoke Humane Society does NOT euthanize any animal due to lack of space, taking in only those animals for which we have shelter and/or foster space.

In 2008:

(Most recent study stats from Cdn. Fed. Of Humane Societies:
http://cfhs.ca/athome/shelter_animal_statistics/)

220,000 cats and dogs entered shelters. CATS out-numbered dogs two to one.

80,000 cats and dogs are euthanized annually (three times more cats than dogs).

CATS represented the largest majority of pets admitted, not adopted and euthanized.

In 2008, there were 84,300 cats admitted to Canadian shelters (compared to 36,651 dogs).

App. 54% of cats or 41, 250 cats, were euthanized.

*The number of cats euthanized was almost three times that of dogs.

*The number of cats admitted was twice that of dogs (6,962 dogs or 19%).

*The number of cats adopted was 8% less than the number of dogs adopted.

*The percentage of cats returned to guardians was only 3.8% compared to 30% for dogs.

Thousands more cats and DOGS never make it to a shelter and die painful, lonely deaths outside.
